End-of-year ceremony a fun family occasion for troops in Eugene/Springfield

Special thanks to Megan Bassett for sharing this story from a special recognitions ceremony earlier this spring!

Daisy, Brownie, Junior and Cadette girls from Spanish-speaking troops in the Eugene/Springfield area had a wonderful end of year recognition ceremony and celebration at the Eugene Service Center on April 19th.  This was an occasion for the whole family as new Girl Scouts received their pins and the girls who participated in the cookie program received their patches and earned incentives. After the candle lighting ceremony and receipt of recognitions, everyone enjoyed a potluck dinner. About 30 people attended.

Treat yourself at Hooky Weekend!

Girl Scout volunteers, have you had the amazing experience known as Hooky Weekend?

The 20-year tradition is a campout for all adults, regardless of their Girl Scout experience. There are workshops for skills, for fun and CPR classes, but the thing we hear about the most is the benefit of meeting and talking shop with other volunteers.

From Hooky Weekend organizer Cheryl Holmes:

Treat yourself, you deserve it!  Hooky Weekend is Girl Scout camp for adults, happening September 20-22, 2013 on the Oregon Coast near Florence (at Camp Cleawox). Volunteers and adults do so much to enrich girls' lives. This is an opportunity to let us enrich yours.

For $40, you will enjoy lodging, meals and fun.  The cost includes CPR/First Aid for the first 24 participants that want/need to take the class.  This year we will have speakers during our meals.  I can't wait!

Call or email Cheryl Holmes for more information 541-510-0800 or girlscout97402@yahoo.com. Registration is through Personify.

Say hello to our 2013 Holly Hammann Award recipients!

GSOSW would like to congratulate our 2013 Holly Hammann Award recipients!

History of the award: Holly Hammann was an avid Girl Scout.  As a girl and an adult, she brought fun and enthusiasm to all.  Holly worked as a counselor at Camp Cleawox and was later a member of the council board of directors.  She contributed greatly to the camping experiences of many girls in our council.  Very early in Holly's adulthood, she was the victim of a fatal automobile accident.  Holly had many friends and through their generous contributions, a fund was established that gives a full campership for use at one session at resident camp to the girl who best represents the essence of Girl Scouting.

And our 2013 recipients are...

Eden Greager
Eden Greager is a Girl Scout Senior from Medford. She started in Girl Scouts as a Daisy and has recently helped as a PA at the Medford Day Camp. She is active in her community, co-leading a children's group at her church and organizing a Christmas present drive for needy families.

Niasha Oden
Niasha Oden is a Beaverton Girl Scout  who started her own service organization, Cranes of Hope, inspired by her mother and grandmother's battles with cancer. Niasha folds thousands of paper cranes, writes messages of hope on them and places them in oncology clinics across the state (and some in other states). She also holds service events where she teaches other people to fold paper cranes.

Congratulations to our 2013 awardees! We are proud to have you in the Girl Scout family. For more information or to nominate a girl for the Holly Hammann Award, check back to the GSOSW website this winter. We will announce on the web, newsletters and social media when the 2014 application is available.
